TEXT: 1 Cor. 2: 5 – 10

INTRODUCTION

It is easier to get the heart of the prudent than the one who lacks understanding. Speaking wisdom among them that are perfect – among those with wisdom and understanding. The true wisdom comes from above not earthly. James 3: 17. But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, and easy to be entreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality and without hypocrisy.

DEFINITION

SPEAK: To talk to somebody about something. To have a conversation with somebody

SPEAKING: Speaking the language mentioned, example – French, English, German etc

WISDOM: The ability to make sensible and give good advice because of the experience and knowledge that you have.

PERFECT: Having everything that is necessary, complete and without fault or weakness; in perfect condition, grown up, mature enough, excellent, very good.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES

  1. This lesson will help us to know and determine which of the wisdom we are to receive or accept, heavenly or earthly.
  2. That the writings and the interpretations of the holy writing were not done through the wisdom of man.
  3. This lesson will help many of us not to be tossed to and fro by every wind of doctrine
  4. It will encourage us to painfully study the word of God and search it according to the word of Christ in John’s gospel – John 5: 39, “Search the scripture; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify for me”.

DISCOURSE

After the introduction of the lesson, definition of key words and aims/objectives, we can now go ahead with the discussion of the lesson. Paul wrote this letter to the Corinthians in reaction to the Jewish Grecians and the Romans philosophers – the Epicureans/Stoics– Acts 17: 18. These people tried to discourage and belittle the apostles with their worldly wisdom

Let us begin our discussion with the text which this lesson is taken from – 1 Cor. 2: 5 – 10

Vs 5 – That your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God. There are many whose faith hang on the wisdom of men, having trust on man instead of God as was the case of the Corinthians, as it is today.

Vs 6 – howbeit, we speak wisdom among them that are perfect, yet not the wisdom of this world, not the prince 0f this world, that comes to naught

Vs 7 – But we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery, even the hidden wisdom, which God ordained before the world unto our glory.

Vs8 – Which none of the princes of this world knew; for had they known it, they would   not have crucified the Lord of glory.

Vs 9 – But as it is written, eye had not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God had prepared for them that love him.

Vs 10 – But God Had had revealed them unto us by His spirit; for the spirit searched all things, yea, the deep things of God.

The way Paul spoke to the Corinthians showed more wisdom and understanding, it showed maturity.

During the time of Christ there were many philosophers.  Some were even regarded as gods that even when they spoke, they, claimed that it was the voice of God not man, but the wisdom of Christ could not be compared with theirs because his wisdom was heavenly.  Only those who were matured could understand him, that was the reason he used to speak in parable and interpret for them to understand.

The Apostolic time:          The apostles came in contact with many philosophers of their time, they were mocked in some areas as can be seen in this passage. Acts 17:17-20.

Vs17 – “Therefore disputed he in synagogue with the Jews, and of the scribes, encountered him (Paul).

And some said, what will this babber say?  Other some.  He seemeth to be a satan forth of strange gods: because he preached unto them Jesus, and the resurrection”

Vs 19 – “And they took him, and brought unto Areopagus, saying, may we know what this new doctrine, wherefore thou speaketh is?”

Vs 20 – “For thou bringest certain strange things to our ears.  We would know therefore what these things means”

Paul throughout his preaching carrier met with stiff opposition, even to the point of doubting his apostleship. That prompted him to defend his apostleship.

1 Cor. 9:1-2

Vs 1 – Am not an apostle? Am I not free? Have I not seen Jesus Christ our Lord?, are ye not my work in the Lord?

Vs 2–If I be not an apostle into others, yet doubtless I am to you: for the seal of mine apostleship are ye in the Lord.

1 Tim. 2:7– Where unto I am ordained a preacher, and an apostle, I speak the truth in Christ and he not; a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and verity.

In this country, this State in particular certain groups of preachers were tagged half baked.  Today the story is quiet different as the professed full-baked have been silenced and pushed to the walls, as did the apostles, teachers, preachers of the first century did to the Epicureans and the stoics.

Paul did not go to the Corinthians with the human wisdom; he went with the wisdom of God and his power.  He did not go there to know what was going on within them but to preach Christ as was crucified, buried and resurrected from the death.  Paul later described the Corinthians as babes.  1 Cor. 3:1 – And I, brethren, could not speak unto you as unto spiritual there means – mature.  The problem with some Nigerian churches and Christians today to just as it was in Corinth and other cities lack of maturity and spirituality.  Many preachers, elders and teachers are still in trouble as long as the Lord’s Supper is concerned according to the letters Paul sent to the Corinthians – 1 Cor. 11:23-24 “That the Lord Jesus the same night in which He was betrayed took bread:  Verse 24 – And when He had given thanks, he break it and said, take, eat: this is my body, which is broken for you: this do in remembrance of me”.  The question is, why did He do it that night?

Another problem passage as far as the Lord’s Super is concerned is Acts 20: 7 – 8

Vs 7 – “Upon the first day of the week, when the disciples came together to break bread, Paul preached unto them, ready to depart on the morrow; and continued his speech until midnight.

Vs 8 – “And there were many light in the upper chamber, where they were gathered together” when did they start to assemble? Today why not the upper chamber, and also many lights?

CONCLUSION

Many people give glory to men more than God because they are more carnal than spiritual. They are slow to learn and search the scriptures to find out the truth. Study the bible by yourself, because it is the bible and bible related books that should help us to acquire this heavenly wisdom.

Another way of getting this wisdom is through the fear of God.

Job 28: 28 – “And unto man he said, behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom, and to depart from evil is understanding”

Wisdom is a Supreme Acquisition – Prov. Prov. 4: 7 – Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom, and all thy getting get understanding.

The wisdom from God is more elastic than one from earth(man)

The conclusion that just Christ was seen in the wedding ceremony, that wedding should be organized by the Church in the Church is earthly wisdom.

The rulers of this world rise and fall. If human wisdom had any merit, surely the world would be better off, but these rulers are constantly falling. The bible says, it is not in man that worketh to direct his steps (Jer. 10: 23). God announced His secrete wisdom in the garden of Eden, then gradually revealed it through the centuries through His Prophets (1 Pet. 1: 10 – 12; Eph. 3: 4 – 7). This secrete wisdom was finally unveiled when Christ was crucified and rose from the grave on the third day.

Thank you and stay blessed in Jesus Name – Amen
