INTRODUCTION:

In Luke 15:8-10 Jesus taught on the parable of the lost coin and in verses 11-24 Jesus told us of the

lost son or the prodigal son in his parable.

Before we unveil the moral lessons embedded in those parables by Jesus Christ, let us reason with

understanding, why Jesus Christ came to the world.

John 3:16-20. For God so loved the world that He sent His son Jesus Christ….. Matt 10:5-16. At

the commencement of his mission on earth, Jesus commanded his initial disciples (12) not to go into

the way of the Gentiles and further warned them not to go into the city of the Samaritans but rather

instructed them to go only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.

Matt 15:24 – Jesus “I was not sent except to the lost sheep of the house of Israel

John 4:9 – Jews had nothing in common with Samaritans. All Gentiles were known as infidels – Not

circumcised

Reconciliation/Unification of Jews and Gentiles

Eph 2:11-22, Jn. 10:14-16 – I have other sheep which are not of this fold, I must bring them together

to be one flock and for one shepherd

The Shepherd and the Sheep Relationship

Eze. 34:1-10 – The false shepherd who ruled the sheep with force and cruelty, allowing the flock to

scatter

Eze. 34:11-23 – The true shepherd is our Lord God who searches for the scattered sheep and bring

them together. He handed over the flock to King David to feed them and be their shepherd

Psm. 23:1 – The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want

Jn 10:11-18 – Christ is the good shepherd

Lk. 2:8 – A good shepherd watch over the flock day and night

A good shepherd is a shareholder in the sheep or flock and is ready to defend and put his life on the

line against any attack by wolves and rustlers but hirelings are simply wage earners who run away

when the wolves or rustlers attack Jn.10:11-15

Lk 15:4-7, Psm. 119:175 – There are sheep that have gone astray and lost (Run-away) for reasons of

the LOVE OF THE WORLD. I Jn 2:15-16 classified into the lust of the flesh, lust of the eye and the

pride of life as follows:

  • Lying/gossiping/backbiting
  • Cheating
  • Adultery/Fornication
  • Jealousy/Envy/hatred
  • Outburst of Wrath
  • Selfishness
  • Social drinking/wasteful spending
  • Victimization (people that work for you or under you)
  • Procrastination/Laziness
  • Boastfulness/pomposity
  • Evil companionship
  • Embezzlement and fraudulent life style
  • Non – neighbourliness
  • Habitual lateness/not regular to meetings
  • Conformity with the world in dressing/Adornment
  • Not heeding to the Great Commission etc

Jn. 21:-15-17 Jesus to Simon Peter “if you love me, feed my sheep” Jesus actually sublet the work of

tending and feeding the flock in his great commission to his disciples- The Elders who are to account

for the sheep and to every Christian to declare the whole counsel of God.

Act 17:30 – These times of ignorance, God overlooked but now commands all to repent

Ezek. 3:17-19, Act 20:26-27 – Warn the wicked and admonish the righteous to be free from their

Advice: Return ye lost sheep, your father – the good shepherd is searching and waiting for you. 1
